Communicating in English can be a pain in the neck for someone who is learning English as second language. But, this doesn't necessarily have to be so. Learning English as second language can be fun too as you will find out, if you will go with the following tips!
1. READ VORACIOUSLY
Make it a point to read as
much as you can afford. Read anything and everything you see in print. That way, you learn new words and improve your vocabulary
as a result.
2. WATCH AMERICANS AND BRITISH TV SHOWS
Watch a lot of American and British sitcoms and drama. Listening to native
speakers of English helps you master the language.
3. STOP USING SMS LINGOS
Make it a point to avoid
the use of text message or social media slangs when writing. Write correctly
in English. Spell your words correctly, even when you're on social media. Whoever says murdering the spelling of your words is classy!
4. DO YOUR THINKING IN ENGLISH
Get your reasoning done in
English. It helps you to know what to say or write in advance.
5. ARGUE WITH YOURSELF IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Sound funny? Yes, it does.
But at the same it helps a great deal in improving your communication skills.
Choose a topic and think about points in favour or against in your head. It
works magic in developing your ability to debate.
6. DON’T TRANSLATE YOUR LOCAL LANGUAGE TO ENGLISH
LITERALLY
Construction of sentences
in your local language may differ from what is acceptable in English. Go with
the acceptable way.
7. KEEP CORRECTING YOURSELF
Ensure you correct
yourself as many times as you find out that you have made a mistake. If you
catch yourself make a mistake in what you say or write, repeat the same thing correctly.
8. WELCOME CORRECTIONS FROM PEOPLE
If you must improve your
communication skills in English, you must be willing to accept corrections when
given. It doesn’t matter, if the correction comes even in the form of
criticism. I know how hurtful this may be sometimes. But remember the wise saying
too, ‘No pain, no gain!’
9. DON’T FORCE AN ACCENT
Learn to pronounce your
words the right way. But don’t fake an accent in your bid to sound foreign. The
bottom-line is to speak correctly in English. Faking an accent only does one
thing; you end up sounding fake.
10. USE ALTERNATE WORDS AS OFTEN AS IT IS
CONVENIENT
Try to use alternate words
for commonly used words. E.g. alright for OK.
11. DON’T REPEAT A WORD TOO MANY TIMES
Avoid the use of a word
over and over again. Look for words with similar meaning. Use English
expressions to polish your sentences.
12. LEARN NEW WORDS
Make it a routine to learn at one new English on daily basis. And take it as a rule to know
the meaning, spelling and the appropriate usage of every word you come across.
The best way to master a new word is to use it as many as times as it is
convenient after learning it.
